Practical website guidance

Write down the problem in terms you can review later. Examples include customers struggling to find a service, staff being unable to update key content, or a form failing to reach the right person. Pick a primary visitor action, such as a project inquiry, and identify who follows up.

01 / THE DETAILS

## Make a page and account inventory

List the existing pages, their purpose and their URLs. Record forms, stores, bookings, analytics and other connected systems. Identify who controls the domain, DNS, hosting, website administration, email and any licensed integrations. Arrange access securely without placing passwords in planning documents.

02 / THE DETAILS

## Record what is working before changing it

Save available search and inquiry data for a clearly dated baseline. Identify pages that receive useful traffic or have links you want to preserve. If data is missing, record that limitation instead of assuming a page has no value.

03 / THE DETAILS

## Decide what stays, changes or moves

Give each old URL an explicit decision. Keep useful URLs when their purpose continues. For genuine moves, choose an equivalent destination. Do not send every removed page to the homepage. Retired content without a suitable replacement may require a real missing-page response.

04 / THE DETAILS

## Assign content and integration responsibilities

For each page, name the person preparing text, supplying images and approving the result. Confirm asset permissions and current service details. For forms, payments, booking or listing integrations, define what the website provider handles and what depends on another vendor.

05 / THE DETAILS

## Test a complete visitor journey

On phone and desktop, find a service from navigation, review its proof and submit a controlled test inquiry. Check required-field errors, the success state, the saved record and staff receipt. Test the same route with a keyboard. Check critical pages for readable text, stable layouts and usable links.

06 / THE DETAILS

## Verify the released website

After the authorized launch, check the production domain again. Confirm redirects, canonical URLs, public indexing settings, sitemap links, media and form destinations. A successful staging test cannot establish production behavior. Keep a rollback route and assign someone to monitor errors and inquiry handling.

07 / THE DETAILS

## A brief you can send to a provider

- Current website and main problem.
- Important pages and integrations to preserve.
- Available content and people responsible for approvals.
- Target timing and known constraints.
- Required handover and support arrangements.
